Gather round and you shall hear the dangers of Benzoyl Peroxide being near… your face! Okay, poets we are not. We’ll stick to what we know best from now on; skin care. In the last “We Said No, But Why?”, we rapped about Phthalates, this time it’s all about the Benjamins Benzoyl Peroxide.
Remember when we told you, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had some pretty slack rules when it came to cosmetic ingredients? Well, nothing’s changed. So what would you think of an ingredient requires an FDA warning on the product label? If you first thought was “it must be pretty gnarly” you were spot on.
Benzoyl Peroxide requires an FDA OTC warning label stating that it’s not safe for pregnant or breast feeding women. That’s saying something. The thing about Benzoyl Peroxide is that, yes, it does get rid of acne causing bacteria, but not without leaving destruction in its place. Often times that destruction is worse than acne itself. It’s sort of like those Sour Patch Kid commercials; first it’s naughty then it’s nice – but in this case you may think it’s nice at first but you’ll soon realize it’s just plain naughty.
The 1st dirty deed Benzoyl Peroxide gets credit for is producing free radicals in the skin. Free radicals damage the skin by causing premature aging and a slew of other unwanted nasties , and that’s not even the worst part. The worst part is the link between free radicals and cancer. No thank you!
Benzoyl Peroxide continues wreaking havoc by slowing down your skin’s ability to heal irritation and wounds. In the case of acne, the skin is often irritated from breakouts and needs to be HEALED.
You know the importance of your skin’s natural oils. Benzoly Peroxide causes your skin loses its natural ability to produce oils and retain healthy moisture. This equals skin that is flaky and increases irritation, because it doesn’t have the necessary moisture to stay looking radiant.
If the reasons listed above haven’t swayed you away from Benzoyl Peroxide, get a load of this. Once it’s absorbed, your body doesn’t know how to get rid of it, so it stays in your liver for the rest of your life. I don’t know about you, but that’s one thing I don’t want sticking around.
